A car is worth restoring when the condition, intended result, available parts and value of the vehicle to its owner justify the likely scale of the project. That value does not have to be purely financial.
Start with the actual condition of the body. Widespread corrosion, extensive previous repairs, missing exterior components and several failing paint areas can make the project much larger than the vehicle first appears.
Parts availability is another important factor. An uncommon panel, moulding, lamp or exterior fitting can affect both the practicality and scope of a restoration, especially on older vehicles.
Financial and personal value should be considered separately. A restoration is not automatically a profitable investment simply because a large amount of skilled work is completed. If resale value is the main objective, compare realistic restoration costs with genuinely comparable finished vehicles.
For a vehicle with family significance, rarity or long-term ownership value, the project may still make sense even where the financial return alone would not justify it.
It is also worth comparing a full restoration with a more targeted repair. Where deterioration is genuinely localised, repairing the affected areas may be more proportionate than dismantling and refinishing the complete exterior.
