A successful body repair is about much more than making damage less visible. The underlying condition of the panel, the quality of the preparation, the accuracy of the repair and the final paint finish all contribute to the result. That is why each vehicle is assessed individually before the most appropriate repair method is chosen.
The projects featured across this archive demonstrate different areas of our work, including accident repairs, car body repairs, bumper repairs, scratch and dent removal, SMART repair, paint matching, paint rectification, full car resprays, colour changes, welding, classic car restoration, body and trim repairs and wheel refurbishment.
No two damaged vehicles are exactly the same. A scratch across one panel may only require a relatively localised repair, while similar-looking damage on another vehicle may have penetrated further through the paint system. A dent may be repairable without replacing the panel, while more extensive impact damage can require additional bodywork before refinishing begins.
The same principle applies to restoration work. The visible condition of an older or classic vehicle does not always reveal everything beneath the surface. Previous repairs, corrosion, old paint systems and deteriorated metalwork can all affect the scope of a restoration once work begins.
For this reason, our project archive is not intended to present one standard solution for every vehicle. Instead, it shows the range of repair methods and finishing work that may be used depending on the condition of the vehicle and the result required.
Accident damage can affect anything from a bumper or individual body panel to several connected areas of a vehicle. Before repairs begin, the damage needs to be assessed carefully so that the work is based on the actual condition of the vehicle rather than appearance alone.
Our accident repair projects can involve repairing damaged panels, correcting bodywork, replacing components where required and refinishing affected areas to restore a consistent appearance. Where an accident repair is being managed through an insurance claim, the assessment and repair process may also need to take the insurer’s requirements into account.
Whatever the size of the repair, preparation remains essential. Panel shape, alignment, surface condition and paint finish all need to work together if the repaired area is to integrate properly with the rest of the vehicle.
Not all body damage is caused by a major collision. Everyday driving, parking and general use can leave vehicles with dents, scratches, scuffs, stone chips, damaged bumpers and other localised imperfections.
Our car body repair projects include many of these common types of damage. The objective is to use a repair method that is appropriate for the affected area rather than automatically carrying out more work than the vehicle requires.
Minor damage may sometimes be suitable for a focused repair, while deeper scratches, larger dents or damaged paintwork can require more extensive preparation and refinishing. By assessing the damage first, we can determine how the area should be repaired and what is required to achieve a clean, durable result.
Scratches and dents vary considerably in depth, size and position. A light mark in the clear coat is very different from a deep scratch that has passed through multiple layers of the paint system, just as a shallow dent in an accessible area can present a different repair challenge from damage close to a panel edge or body line.
Where appropriate, SMART repair techniques can provide an effective solution for smaller, localised areas of damage without refinishing a much larger section unnecessarily. Conventional body repair remains the more appropriate approach where the affected area is too extensive or where the damage requires more substantial correction.
Our project examples show why the repair method should be chosen according to the vehicle rather than simply according to the name of the damage.
Bumpers are particularly exposed to parking damage, low-speed impacts, scratches, scuffs and cracks. Depending on the material, location and extent of the damage, replacement is not always the only option.
Repairable bumper damage can often be corrected through a combination of reshaping, plastic repair, surface preparation and refinishing. The important factor is determining whether the damaged area can be repaired to an appropriate standard before work begins.
Once the physical repair has been completed, correct preparation and colour matching help the bumper blend naturally with the surrounding bodywork.
Paintwork is one of the most visible parts of any body repair. Even when the underlying panel has been repaired correctly, an inaccurate colour or inconsistent finish can make the repaired area immediately noticeable.
Modern automotive finishes can contain metallic, pearl and other effects, and the existing paint on a vehicle can also change slightly over time. Previous repairs may introduce additional variations. For this reason, achieving a convincing match involves more than simply identifying the original manufacturer colour code.
Our paint and refinishing work combines colour matching with careful surface preparation and controlled application. The aim is to achieve consistency in colour, gloss and overall finish across the repaired area.
AG Body Shop also has dedicated spray booth facilities for professional refinishing, allowing paintwork to be carried out in an appropriate controlled environment.
Some vehicles come to us not because of new damage, but because previous bodywork or paint repairs have not produced the desired result. Problems can include visible paint mismatch, uneven surfaces, poor preparation, overspray, deterioration or previous repairs that remain obvious when viewed alongside the surrounding panels.
Correcting this type of work usually requires identifying the cause of the defect before simply applying more paint. Where necessary, the affected area may need to be stripped back, reshaped, prepared again or otherwise corrected before refinishing.
Paint rectification projects demonstrate the importance of the stages that take place before the final coat is applied. Good refinishing begins with a sound and properly prepared surface.
A full car respray is a much more extensive process than repainting an individual damaged panel. It may be considered where paint deterioration affects several areas, where a vehicle has accumulated inconsistent previous repairs, during restoration work or when the owner wants a major visual transformation.
The quality of a full respray depends heavily on preparation. Existing defects need to be identified and corrected so that they are not simply covered by a new finish. Panels and surfaces must then be prepared consistently before the vehicle moves into the refinishing stages.
We also undertake vehicle colour changes. These projects require careful planning because achieving a professional result involves considering how the new colour will appear across the vehicle rather than treating each panel in isolation.
Our respray and colour-change projects provide examples of how extensive refinishing can transform the overall appearance of a vehicle when the preparation and finishing stages are approached properly.
Vehicle restoration requires a different approach from routine cosmetic repair. Classic and older vehicles may have corrosion, previous body repairs, damaged panels, multiple layers of paint and areas of deterioration that have developed over many years.
A complete restoration can therefore involve several stages of bodywork. Depending on the vehicle, these may include removing previous materials, repairing damaged metal, treating corrosion, carrying out welding, correcting panels and preparing the body for refinishing.
Our restoration work is focused on the vehicle’s body, exterior repair and refinishing requirements. The precise scope of every restoration is established according to the condition of the individual vehicle and the work agreed for that project.
Because hidden deterioration may only become apparent once older materials or previous repairs are exposed, restoration projects also require a methodical approach. The objective is not simply to make an older vehicle look better from the outside, but to address the bodywork properly before the finished paintwork is applied.
Corrosion is particularly important in older vehicles and restoration projects. Surface rust and more advanced corrosion require different levels of intervention, and covering corrosion without properly treating the affected area does not provide a meaningful long-term body repair.
Where the condition of the vehicle requires it, damaged sections may need to be repaired using appropriate metalwork and welding before the surface can be prepared for paint. This allows the refinishing stage to begin from a properly repaired foundation rather than hiding deterioration beneath cosmetic materials.
Our bodywork and restoration projects can therefore involve both visible finishing work and the less visible preparation required to achieve it.
The overall appearance of a repaired vehicle is not determined by paintwork alone. Damaged exterior trim and worn or damaged wheels can also affect the finished presentation of the car.
