Accident & Insurance Repairs

Is an Insurance Repair Estimate the Same as Insurer Approval?

No. A repair estimate and insurer approval are separate stages.

A body shop estimate describes the repair work that appears necessary and the associated costs based on the areas that can be assessed. It may cover panel or bumper repair, dismantling, replacement components, surface preparation, paint materials and refinishing.

The insurer then applies the policy and claim information to decide whether it will authorise and fund the proposed work. It may approve the estimate, request further evidence, arrange another inspection or question specific costs or operations.

Receiving a claim reference also does not automatically mean that the repair estimate has been approved. Before instructing insurance-funded work, confirm exactly what the insurer has authorised and whether there is an excess or any amount that may remain the customer’s responsibility.

If additional accident damage becomes visible after dismantling, revised repair information may also need further authorisation.

The distinction is important because the body shop assesses and completes the physical repair, while the insurer makes decisions about cover and payment under the policy.
