Scratches, Dents & Bumpers

What Is the Difference Between SMART Repair and Conventional Body Repair?

SMART repair is generally aimed at suitable localised cosmetic damage, while conventional body repair is used when the affected area or repair process needs to be broader.

A SMART-style approach may be appropriate for certain small scratches, scuffs or local paint defects where the damage, position, colour and surrounding finish allow the repair to remain controlled within a limited area.

Conventional body repair becomes more relevant where the damage involves significant panel deformation, several connected areas, corrosion, deeper bumper damage or preparation and refinishing that cannot reasonably be contained within a small localised section.

The repair method should not be chosen simply because one option sounds faster or smaller. A local repair that is kept artificially narrow can produce a poorer result if the damage actually requires more preparation or a wider paint transition.

Similarly, a small suitable defect does not automatically need the entire panel or vehicle to be refinished.

The starting point is therefore the actual condition of the damaged area. AG Body Shop can assess whether a suitable local cosmetic approach or broader body repair is the more appropriate route.

See our SMART Repairs service for suitable localised work, or Car Body Repairs for wider exterior damage.
