For a suitable localised repair, the damaged panel can be prepared and refinished using colour selected in relation to the existing vehicle. Where the colour is visually sensitive, a controlled blend into a suitable adjoining area may be appropriate to create a smoother transition.
A wider respray becomes relevant for different reasons. These can include widespread paint deterioration, several inconsistent previous repairs, peeling coatings across multiple panels or an owner who specifically wants a coherent new finish across the complete exterior.
The key distinction is between solving one repair and changing the overall condition of the vehicle. Painting more of the car is not automatically a better solution when the surrounding finish is sound and worth retaining.
