Suitable previous body and paint repairs can be assessed for correction, but the new repair has to be based on the condition that is actually found beneath the existing finish.
Signs of an earlier poor repair can include visible sanding marks, uneven panel shape, excessive or cracking filler, colour mismatch, poor paint texture, peeling coatings, corrosion returning through the surface or panel gaps that do not look consistent.
The visible defect does not always show how extensive the previous work is. Once unstable coatings or filler are removed, the repair area may prove smaller or larger than it first appeared.
A lasting correction should address the underlying panel or substrate before new paint is applied. Covering unstable filler, unresolved corrosion or poorly prepared material with another layer of paint can reproduce the same problem later.
Where the issue is localised, the repair may fit within general Car Body Repairs. If several panels contain old repairs and inconsistent paintwork, a broader restoration or refinishing plan may be more appropriate.
Clear photographs can help with an initial review, but previous repair depth is one of the areas where a workshop inspection can be particularly valuable.
